A History of Kilmainham Gaol

Charting the history of one of Ireland’s most infamous prisons from the time of its opening in 1796, to its closure in 1924 and finally the Gaols refurbishment beginning in 1960.

For most of its life Kilmainham functioned as an ordinary prison but its detention of the leading figures of Irish nationalism has perhaps brought it most fame. Inmates included Robert Emmet, Anne Devlin, Patrick Pearse and Eamon De Valera.
